“Then you've lost the Force and Aki.”
Another nod. He had yet to tell her about that as well.
“Then you had to raise Nayuta alone, with almost no help.”
Another nod.
“Yes, I know you were technically an adult by now, but that doesn't mean you were ready, you had just started high school, and all sorts of things you deserved to experience.”
Another nod.
“But you tried your best, yes there were mistakes, but the blame for them is not on you.”
The boy sighed and nodded, his warm breath ghosted across Asa's face. Only now did she realize how close they were. Her hand rested on his face, his hands still holding her other hand, which was now resting in her lap. Their knees were touching. She noticed a faint tinge of red on his cheeks.
“Hey, Asa?”
“Y-yes?”
“I'm sorry if this is an inappropriate question, but... who are we?”
Her heart dropped to her feet.
“I... what do you mean?”
She was buying her time. His question was perfectly reasonable, hell, she was asking herself the same question. They had been inseparable since the apocalypse (except for wanting to do things on their own, solo missions, the usual stuff), they worked together, they constantly leaned on each other emotionally, they shared their inner demons, they had long late night conversations, physical touching, though they were still awkward, they did more and more, they lived together, I mean, what were they ?!! Denji shifted uncomfortably as she continued to hold his hand against her face, his eyes looked around before focusing on her, his cheeks turning even redder.
"I mean... we're kind of really close, aren't we?"
She nodded her head, her head was too dizzy for words right now, she froze physically.
“I'm not trying to be weird, because I know you can get uncomfortable about things like this.”
Another nod of the head.
“We went on dates” -one date, the second date you set me up for- “we talked a lot, we lived together and did a lot of things together, we kissed, in that alley-”
“That was Yor.”
Denji nodded his head.
“I mean, we didn't talk about it.”
“Did you want to?”
He nodded his head.
"Well, Yor did, and she was the one who kissed you all those times. I mean, I was there for her, but I wasn't in control."
He nodded his head.
“I'm sorry she did that.”
“I didn't say I had a problem with it.”
His blush deepened.
“Except for the alley.”
Another nod at her correction.
“Still, I know it sucks to be out of control, I'm sorry you had to deal with it, even if it wasn't the worst.”
Asa absent-mindedly rubbed her temple with her thumb.
“I appreciate that.”
“She said you liked me, but I wasn't sure if she was lying.”
Asa held his breath. Honestly, Yoru had turned things around so much that she wondered if she really liked him. After all, Yoru could manipulate any number of things about her, so why not her feelings? But right now, Yoru wasn't here.... and she still felt something for him.
"Asa? I have more experience in dating, so I won't lose my temper or act weird if you don't..."
Claim it, it's yours!
Before Asa could stop herself, she rushed forward as if driven by some force or devilish instinct. Denji remained perfectly still as her lips touched his. Even though Asa had been present when Yoru kissed her and felt it too, it was different now: this time she was in control. She was already thinking of pulling away and apologizing when she suddenly felt Denji kissing her back.
See? Everything is in your hands.
Asa pushed that thought aside. She wouldn't have cared if those thoughts plagued her during battle or in everyday life, but not now, now was her time and those thoughts could go to shit. She pressed forward, kissing him more and more fervently and he returned the favor, one of his hands slid to her back and she didn't even feel like slapping him, this was fun! She wished there were more things like this in her life: she and Denji having fun, doing what they wanted to do! No public safety, no Yore, no devils, no apocalypse, no....
KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK.
A sharp knock on the door pulled the pair out of their private world. Asa recoiled from Denji like he was on fire.
"Oh my god, I... You need to. We..."
Denji stared at her with a deep blush on his face as she stammered, stood up and moved toward the door, then backed away again. She pointed imperiously at him.
"You! You have to answer!"
He groaned.
“But we can...”
"We can... later! Right now, the door! Answer it!"
Denji sighed, stood up and strode to the door, a slight blush still playing on his cheeks as he opened it. In front of him stood a girl about his age with a distinctive tilt of her head, rings in her ears, and a blank stare.
“Lil D?”
“I told you it's so wrong to pronounce my real name like that.”
He shrugged.
"I like it better that way. Why are you here?"
“I just got out of a double date with a friend, so I thought I'd stop by your new apartment.”
The girl walked past Denji, opening the door slightly, and headed into the living room. She glanced at Asa and nodded.
“Sister.”
Asa sighed.
"Yor's gone, remember? And what are you doing here!"
The girl sat down on the couch as if the place belonged to her.
“I told you I had a double date.”
Asa sighed as Denji closed the door and walked over to her.
"Yeah, but why? I didn't think we'd see you after the whole Doomsday thing."
The girl shrugged, looking at what was on TV, then looked around the coffee table and couch.
“I never said that.”
Denji groaned and rubbed his head.
"But where were you? We had a rough time after that."
Lil Dee shrugged, continuing to look for something.
“The school was closed due to an emergency, so there was nothing to do.”
She raised her eyes to Denji.
“Do you have any snacks?”
Denji reached the kitchen, grabbed a bag of chips, and started holding them out to Death. Asa grabbed his wrist.
"No, she doesn't get snacks. She left us after we stopped the apocalypse."
“I'm the one who separated you from your former roommate, I deserve chips.”
Denji nodded his head.
“She's got you figured out.”
Asa sighed and removed her hand. Death took the bag of chips from Denji and began crunching with pleasure.
“I had a lot of things to do after that.”
“Like what?”
A shrug.
“Things to do.”
Asa pinched the bridge of her nose.
“So you came back to go to school?”
“Mm.”
“And stopped by because you had a hot date?”
She nodded in response to Denji's question.
"I didn't really want to go on a date, but my high school friend begged me to. It meant she got a date with her lover and I got a free meal."
“Sick shit.”
Asa slapped Denji's hand lightly. He rubbed his arm.
“What?”
“Focus.”
Death tilted his head, looking at Asa.
"Maybe you guys should go on a date. It's pretty fun."
Asa felt the heat rise to her face and was relieved to see Denji's cheeks turn slightly pink. Death looked between them and nodded, standing up.
"О. You two are starting to frolic, aren't you? Sorry to interrupt. I'll be going now."
Asa reached out and grabbed the other girl's hand, heading for the door.
"Wait. Why did you come in, really?"
Death stared at Asa's hand, prompting her to remove it from the deviless' hand. The girl nodded her head.
